During Q1 of 2012, trading on the New York Stock Exchange was down 23 percent vs. last year. But if many individual investors have stayed out of the market, how has the S&P 500 more than doubled? Moreover, what do we see ahead?...

Today, you truly have the world at your fingertips. It’s easier than ever for you to get exposure to global markets, especially given the explosion in ETFs. But how do you decide which market is most worthy of your attention? And how do you know if your forecasting source is qualified and objective? With that in mind, I sat down with EWI's Mark Galasiewski, a monthly contributor to the "Asian-Pacific Stocks Section" of our Global Market Perspective.

At the start of April, few investors anticipated any trouble ahead. March ended strong, and the majority of financial pundits and investors we convinced that April would also not disappoint. When you look at a long-term chart of Europe's four main stock indexes --- the DAX, FTSE-100, CAC-40 and EuroStoxx 50 -- you notice one striking detail: Since at least 2000, every prolonged stock market rally turned out to be a set-up for another devastating crash. This fact is obvious when you glance at the opening chart of EWI's new, March 2012 European Financial Forecast. Of course, European stocks have rallied strongly off their 2009 lows, too. What should you make of this?

A rare opportunity came my way this past December: My company, Elliott Wave International, sent me to Orlando to attend Peter Brandt's Traders' Boot Camp. I say "rare opportunity" because, well, how often do you get to come to a training event for serious market speculators? Of the 20 traders at that Boot Camp, I'd say 7 or 8 had a $1 million-plus trading account. One had been written about in a Forbes article. There was a lot of success in that room. Why, then, you may wonder, did those traders pay good money to spend 2.5 days with Peter Brandt, the instructor?

As a young trader, Brandt says he had the good fortune of having two older traders show him the ropes. He says: "As much as I love trading, it's a tough business. I want to teach young traders -- and then hire them. I hope that through my Traders Boot Camps, I'll find that new talent."

Most people's thinking simply defaults to physics when analyzing financial events. But when we take the time to examine the results of applying that model, we find that it is not useful either for predicting or explaining market behavior.

We have already seen that economic performance, earnings and inflation do not necessarily coincide with movements in apparently related financial markets. Is there any evidence that dramatic news events that make headlines, such as terrorist attacks, political events, wars, crises or any such events are causal to stock market movement?

People default to physics when predicting social trends. The Law of Conservation of Momentum makes possible our modern technological world. People rely on it every day. Despite its use in so many areas, however, it is inapplicable to predicting social change.

Successful market timing depends upon learning the patterns of crowd behavior. By anticipating the crowd, you can avoid becoming a part of it. The Wave Principle is not primarily a forecasting tool; it is a detailed description of how markets behave. The progression of mass emotions from pessimism to optimism and back again tends to follow a similar path each time around.

U.S. treasuries have long since been the butt of the financial joke, ridiculed for being worth little more than the paper they're issued on. The idea being: once you factor in early redemption penalties and inflation, the interest payments on long- or even short-dated securities often outweigh the capital gains. Not Anymore.

“Critical thinking” -- a.k.a. thinking for yourself -- is the pinnacle of a good education.
But even though you realize it's important to think for yourself, as time goes by you find yourself going with the majority. Not rocking the boat is a safer bet. You come to believe you just might live longer.
