Trading options is not for the faint of heart. The stakes are sky high. You're not just buying or selling a security. You're also doing so with the expectation that said security reach a specific price by a specific time. That's why with options trading, most traditional forms of technical analysis fall short. At their best, they can identify WHAT the trend at hand is. Elliott wave analysis, however, goes the full distance...

Quick story. Back in 1998-1999, when a gallon of regular at a local QT gas station cost 67 cents (I kid you not), a colleague of mine here at the office was talking to an old buddy, who told him this: "When a barrel of oil costs less than a 12-pack of beer, you know it's time to buy." Boy, do I wish I had listened.

Before joining Elliott Wave International, our Senior Tutorial Instructor, Wayne Gorman, lived in New York and traded the markets for his own account using mainly Elliott wave analysis -- and made a living at it for almost 5 years. We caught up with Wayne to ask him some questions about trading with Elliott waves. EWI: Wayne, where and how did you learn Elliott so well? ...

Elliott wave analysis comes down to this: The ability to identify patterns in price charts. If you can do that, you can do Elliott. Sometimes it's easy, sometimes not so much -- but because there are only 13 known Elliott wave patterns, you can train yourself to find them fairly quickly in most situations. With that in mind, let's take a look at the recent price action in crude.

Volatility can be scary, but let's face it: You can't make money in the markets when prices go sideways. You only talk about profits and losses when prices are trending. So for an experienced trader -- and also one with nerves of steel -- volatility can mean opportunity.

How often have you heard analysts refer to a down day on Wall Street as "traders taking profits"? Sounds great, but the sobering fact is that most traders -- in futures, commodities, or forex -- lose money. Yet some traders do win; some even set records. In 1984, Elliott Wave International's president Robert Prechter won the U.S. Trading Championship, setting a new all-time profit record of 444.4% in a monitored real-money options account. Here is a link to the free report where he lays out his requirements for successful trading.

As long as you know how to type, few things are easier than entering an online trading order. What's difficult is winning on those trades. "Ease of trading" does not equal "ease of winning," yet inexperienced traders confuse the two all the time. Is it any wonder, then, that statistically only about 5% of futures traders make money over the long haul?

Several recent reports have pointed out that, in the years before its global train wreck, AIG ran itself less like an insurance company and more like a hedge fund. On that, read this quote about modern-day hedge funds from the May 2008 Elliott Wave Theorist by EWI’s founder and president Bob Prechter.
